How to Set Up Salesforce Data Cloud?

Whether you want to map complex data streams, explore data graphs, or segment audiences, you can set up your own hands-on environment entirely for free.

If you are aiming to become a Data Cloud expert, here is a quick, beginner-friendly guide to spinning up your instance and unlocking its full configuration power.

Step 1: Grab a Free Developer Org

First things first, you need a playground. Head over to developer.salesforce.com to create a free developer account. Once you fill out the form and log in, you will be greeted by the standard Salesforce welcome screen.

Step 2: Assign the Data Cloud Architect Permission

When you first log in, Data Cloud won't be visible. To fix this, you need to grant yourself the right access.

Note: You must have System Administrator permissions in your org to assign these permission sets to users.

1. Navigate to Setup and search for Users.

2. Click on your user profile.

3. Scroll down to PermissionSetAssignments and click EditAssignments.

4. Use Ctrl + F to search for DataCloudArchitect.

5. Click Add to select it, then click Save.

By giving yourself the Architect role, you unlock total control—allowing you to map data model objects, query data, and configure activations later on.

Step 3: Initialize Data Cloud Setup

Once your permissions are saved, give your browser a quick refresh. You will see a brand-new option in your Setup menu: DataCloudSetup.

Click into it, and you will see a prompt to set up your instance.

• Click the GetStarted button.

• Salesforce will automatically begin provisioning your Data Cloud instance in the background.

• You can freely navigate away and work on other tasks while this runs.
