How Salesforce Marketing Cloud Engagement Email Studio Powers Personalized Email Campaigns?
We all use Gmail or Outlook to message friends and colleagues. But how do major brands send a single email to millions of people that still feels like it was written just for them?
They use Salesforce Marketing Cloud’s Email Studio.
Unlike everyday email providers, Email Studio is designed to build massive email campaigns that are highly personalized and dynamically tailored to every single recipient. Here is how it works.
Personalization Strings: Making it Personal
When a new user signs up on a website, their data (like name, age, and location) is saved in a Data Extension—which is just a fancy term for a Salesforce database table.
Instead of sending a generic "Dear Customer" email, Email Studio uses Personalization Strings. These strings automatically grab data from the database to customize the text.
Example: If Sam signs up, the email automatically reads, "Hi Sam!" If Robert signs up, it dynamically changes to, "Hi Robert!"
AMPScript: Making it Dynamic
What if you want to change more than just a name? Imagine you run an e-commerce brand. If a subscriber is male, you want to show him men’s shoes; if female, women’s dresses.
To achieve this, Email Studio uses AMPScript, a built-in programming language. It allows you to create simple "if/then" logic:
- If the subscriber is female, show Category A.
- If male, show Category B.
One email template, infinite possibilities.
Smart Testing (A/B Testing)
Before hitting send to millions of subscribers, Email Studio lets you run A/B Tests.
You can test two different subject lines or images on a small sample audience. The system tracks which version performs better and automatically deploys the winning version to the rest of your list.
