Salesforce Data Cloud (formerly Data 360) is a powerhouse for unifying data from both Salesforce and external systems. But to keep your data secure and organized, control over who does what is vital. Access is managed through Permission Sets, which dictate exactly what features a user can see and manipulate.
If you are a Salesforce System Administrator, you can easily assign these four primary Data Cloud permission sets from Salesforce Setup. Here is a quick breakdown to help you choose the right role for your team.

| Data Cloud Architect | System Admins & Power Users | Full admin rights. Can create data streams, map data lake objects to data models, build data graphs, write calculated insights, and query data. |
| Data Cloud Activation Manager | Data & Marketing Strategists | Develops segmentation and activation strategies. Crucially, they can set up Data Activation Targets (like Marketing Cloud or Commerce Cloud). |
| Data Cloud Activation Specialist | Campaign Creators | Builds segments and executes activations. However, they cannot create activation targets; they rely on targets built by Managers or Architects. |
| Data Cloud User | View-Only Stakeholders | Read-only access. Can view configurations and data within the platform but cannot create, modify, or manipulate anything. |
Segmentation and Activation: How It Works
Data Cloud shines by pulling diverse data into a single location. Marketing teams can then use the Segmentation feature to slice this unified data into targeted groups.
Once a segment is ready, it is Activated and sent to an external platform—such as Salesforce Marketing Cloud or Commerce Cloud. While an Activation Specialist can happily build these daily segments, an Activation Manager or Architect must first step in to establish the bridge (the Activation Target) to those external systems.
