SFMC Deliverability
Investing in Salesforce Marketing Cloud (SFMC) is a major power move, but watching your beautifully crafted campaigns land straight in the spam folder? Total nightmare. To maximize your ROI in Email Studio, you must master the art of email deliverability.
Here is your quick guide to keeping your sender reputation pristine.
1. Guard Your Subscriber Statuses
SFMC tracks four subscriber statuses: Active, Bounced, Unsubscribed, and Held (Undeliverable). High deliverability relies entirely on emailing Active subscribers.
Soft Bounces: Temporary glitches, like a full inbox. However, if a subscriber soft-bounces 3 times within a 15-day window, SFMC automatically moves them to Held.
Hard Bounces: Permanent errors caused by invalid addresses or typos (e.g.,
xyz.gmail.com). This immediately changes their status to Held.
Always exclude Held and Unsubscribed contacts from your future sends to safeguard your reputation.
2. Ace CAN-SPAM Compliance
SFMC uses SendClassifications to manage traffic based on legal guidelines, dividing your emails into two main types:
Commercial (Promotional): Requires an authenticated sender profile, a clear subject line, a physical mailing address in the footer, and an unsubscribe link. Tip: Use PublicationLists so users can opt out of specific topics (like sales alerts) while remaining active for others (like webinars).
Transactional (Receipts/Invoices): Triggered strictly by user actions. These are legally exempt from requiring unsubscribe links.
3. Invest in a Sender Authentication Package (SAP)
For true account branding, SAP is non-negotiable. It secures custom PrivateDomains for your emails and CloudPages, alongside ReplyMailManagement to process inbound subscriber replies.
Crucially, SAP includes a DedicatedIPAddress. This completely isolates your sender reputation so you aren't penalized by the spammy habits of other organizations on a shared IP.
4. Commit to an IP Warm-Up
With a fresh Dedicated IP, never blast your entire list on day one. You must perform an IPWarm-Up—gradually scaling your daily send volumes over weeks to build steady trust with internet service providers (ISPs).
Follow these foundational setups, and you will stay out of the spam trap and land exactly where you belong: right in the inbox!
